Is Sweet Smell of Success an iconic Hollywood film that sits alongside Casablanca, All About Eve, His Girl Friday, and Sunset Boulevard in the cinematic pantheon, a movie that everybody is familiar even if they haven't seen it, practically through osmosis? Or is it a cult film whose fans merely believe everyone knows about it? If the blank-faced reactions I keep getting whenever I mention this title to friends is any indication, Sweet Smell of Success is not as famous as film buffs think it is... even after getting adapted into a big-time Broadway musical and recently being named the second-greatest New York movie of all time by New York magazine film critic David Edelstein. (Dog Day Afternoon came in first.)Anyhow, the new Criterion DVD edition of Sweet Smell of Success provided me with the perfect opportunity to sing the movie's praises on CBC Radio this week in my regular "Hidden Gem" segment. You can listen to the segment by clicking here... where you'll find hard evidence of the film's apparently contemporary obscurity: whoever updates the CBC website mistakenly refers to the film as Sweet Sound of Success. Or is that just their radio bias showing?
