Staggering number of women wearing wrong-size clothing - ABC Action News

A staggering number of women are wearing the wrong-sized clothing. In fact, research points to up to 80 percent. But why?

Jordan Brown wasn't always willing to take multiple sizes into the dressing room with her.

"It looks so much better because you can actually see my body," said Brown.

She was wearing a size 10, when she's actually more like a 6. She was hiding what she called her imperfections.

"That's two sizes bigger than I am. I don't know necessarily why. You just cover your body. Sometimes it feels a little more comfortable," said Brown. "When in reality, if you wear clothes that fit, you look so much better."

She's not alone. The ladies at Lola Dré, a women's clothing store in Jupiter, said they see it all the time.

"Shockingly 80 percent of women are not wearing the right size. It goes both ways, too small or too big," said Andre Arceneaux at Lola Dré. "A lot of time women don't see themselves how the outside world sees them, and they camouflage themselves behind clothing."

Here's advice from the pros on how to find the right fit:

Wrinkles point to a problem. Make sure you sit first in jeans to see if they feel good. Also, for jackets, always move your arms.

"Move their arms across and see how it feels," said Arceneaux.

If you find yourself in between sizes, size up. You can always alter them later. Finally don't be afraid of fashion tape for a quick fix.

Ask for help. You may walk out the door with a confidence boost.

"I sit up straighter. I feel more comfortable at work, when I go out, because I know I look good now. Before, I wasn't sure," said Brown.

Some industries appear more conducive to women leaders than others.

Companies in the apparel industry boasted the highest rate of CEO replacements who are women (53.8%, or seven out of 13) last year, while companies in the government and nonprofit sector had the highest number of women CEO replacements (114 out of 263, or 43.3%).

That's according to a new report from the executive outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Women's clothing sales far outpace those of men: sales of women's clothing reach approximately $643 billion annually, according to market-research group Euromonitor, compared to around $420 billion a year for men.

Other industries with relatively high shares of women CEO replacements included hospitals (35.7%, or 35 out of 98), health care and products (22.6%, or 21 out of 93), and the financial industry (20%, or 22 out of 110).

At the other end of the spectrum, the tech industry had just 7.6% women CEO replacements (14 out of 185), while six industries — cannabis, chemical, engineering, legal, mining and telecommunications — had no CEO replacements in 2019 who were women.

Studies have shown gender stereotyping starts in school and at home, and continues into the workplace, meaning that there are fewer women in senior management or C-suite positions to be appointed as CEO.

A 2016 study of 21,500 eighth graders found that 45% of the girls were proficient at using their skills to solve real-world technology and engineering scenarios, compared with 42% of the boys. By the time they're teenagers, however, a small share of girls plan to pursue a career in STEM. Girls' hesitancy to get into these jobs may be due in part to the images of scientists they're exposed to early on in television and other media.

Women who leave the engineering field report things like being belittled or insulted behind their back at work as well as being treated in a condescending or patronizing manner, according to a 2014 study by Nadya Fouad, an educational psychology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The Challenger report also found that a smaller share of women replaced outgoing CEOs last year than they did the previous year. The percentage slowed from 22.5% in 2018 to 21.7% in 2019, having mostly climbed since their 12.4% share in 2010.

Still, the number of women replacement CEOs (308 out of a total 1,422 replacement CEOs recorded) represented a record high from 10 years ago, according to the report. Men replaced women in 131 cases in 2019, while women replaced men in 189 cases.

"It is a bit surprising given the current culture, as well as the sheer number of high-profile male chief executives who have left their posts due to allegations of inappropriate behavior, that we did not see the number of women CEO replacements trend up," Andrew Challenger added.

To Challenger's point, former McDonald's MCD, +0.47% executive Steve Easterbrook, for example, was dethroned from his CEO position last year after acknowledging he'd had a consensual relationship with an employee. ("Given the values of the company, I agree with the board that it is time for me to move on," he said at the time, according to the Associated Press.) Chris Kempczinski, a male executive at the fast-food company, took his place.

Cannabis, chemical, engineering, legal, mining and telecommunications had no female CEO replacements in 2019.

On the flip side, Warner Bros. T, +0.34%   got its first female chief executive last June in Ann Sarnoff, who was hired to lead the film studio after former CEO Kevin Tsujihara resigned amid allegations that he had promised roles to an aspiring actress with whom he had a sexual relationship. (Tsujihara said he had exited to avoid being a distraction, the AP reported, while his attorney denied he had played a direct role in the actress getting hired.)

McDonald's and Warner Bros. did not immediately return requests for comment on this story.

Female CEOs led just 33 Fortune 500 companies (or 6.6%) as of last year, a low share that marked a record high. A related phenomenon known as the "glass cliff," in which struggling companies tap women leaders to right the ship, has also been well documented.

Kohl's Corp. KSS, -0.15% was downgraded to market perform from outperform at Cowen as weakness in women's clothing, a key category, higher promotions and digital fulfillment costs put the retailer's comparable sales and margins at risk. Cowen lowered its price target to $53 from $56. Analysts note Kohl's strength in the active category, its loyalty program and its real estate, which has avoided struggling malls. However, analysts say Kohl's is struggling with traffic volatility and is in the early stages of attracting a younger customer. Cowen joins Jefferies analysts, who downgraded Kohl's stock on Tuesday. Cowen analysts favor Target Corp. TGT, -0.54% because it has a mix of private labels and national brands that drive momentum across a variety of categories, including women's apparel. And Cowen is favorable towards Nordstrom Inc. JWN, +0.92% thanks to its localized strategy, digital approach, and improvement at the off-price Rack business. Kohl's stock is up 1.3% in Wednesday premarket trading, but down 27.5% over the past year. The S&P 500 index SPX, +0.45% has gained 25.7% over the last year.
