"Oh-oh-oh-orange, oh-oh-oh-orange"
Following the release of critically-acclaimed FROOT in 2015, her highest charting album in the U.S. to date, Welsh singer/songwriter MARINA soon dropped the "and the Diamonds" moniker as she prepped for her next musical step.
MARINA was then featured on two outstanding Clean Bandit collaborations ("Disconnect" and "Baby") and announced plans for upcoming fourth studio album Love + Fear, a two-part, 16-track collection exploring the idea that humans are only capable of experiencing the two emotions. "Handmade Heaven", an ethereal pop effort, was released as the project's lead single in February. Uptempo "Superstar" followed soon after.
However, the artist now embraces the approaching spring and summer seasons with "Orange Trees", a radiant, acoustic guitar-driven ballad where she continues on her identity search. While sounding as if directed to a lover on the surface, the songwriting imagery paints a picture instead of self-love and growth while visiting a familiar place.
Produced and co-written by Oscar Gorres (Adam Lambert, Hilary Duff, Troye Sivan), the track is inspired by MARINA's Greek heritage and the island of Lefkada in Greece where her father's family originated from. It appears MARINA has made a getaway to try and return to her cultural and artistic roots. "I can see the flowers and the greenery, I take a breath of air, I feel free, spent so long, was busy chasing happiness, when all I needed was a little peace," she sings on the opening verse.
"Orange Trees" has been described as a breath of fresh air by the artist, and the soothing production falls in line with the underlying meaning and purpose. The breezy, carefree vibe aids MARINA's tranquil vocal performance as she takes some time away from the chaos of the music industry to rediscover who she is as an artist, but more importantly, as a person.
Though far from similar to the radio-ready, electropop structure of Electra Heart and the disco, synth-pop sheen of FROOT, the new "Orange Trees" is easily MARINA's most accessible solo release since "Blue". It's now a strong one-two-three punch for the new album, at least for the Love portion.
